How Is Come Solo Trivia Different From Weekly Trivia?

It’s true that this is not your typical weekly trivia night at your neighborhood bar, but not to worry. It’s exactly what it sounds like: a trivia night where you come solo and meet your teammates when you arrive!

Instead of gathering your usual group of friends, you’ll be placed on a randomized team for an abbreviated game of Whaddayaknow? trivia. Then, halfway through the evening, you’ll switch things up with a brand-new team for game two.

It’s a chance to test your knowledge, learn something new, and strike up conversations with people you might never have met otherwise. Whether you’re hoping to make new friends, expand your social circle, or meet someone special, Come Solo Trivia makes connecting with people feel a little more natural.

And yes, there might even be some sparks. We’ll leave that part up to the powers that be (the trivia gods, some might call them!)

Why Whaddayaknow? and Hot Potato Hearts Are the Dream Team

Simple, it’s the best of both worlds: tried-and-true bar trivia meets low-pressure social connection.

Whaddayaknow? has been hosting bar trivia in Chicago for nearly 20 years. We know a thing or two about bringing people together over fun questions, friendly competition, and the occasional heated debate over an answer. Usually, though, you need to bring your own friends to form a team.

That’s where Hot Potato Hearts comes in.

Created in 2021, Hot Potato Hearts hosts inclusive events designed to build community and foster meaningful connections in comfortable, low-pressure environments. Their approach makes meeting people feel less like an obligation and more like something you actually want to do.

Together, we’re taking everything people love about trivia night and adding a new opportunity to connect with the people around you.

A common goal? Everyone wants to win, so you can expect to bond quickly with your new team…both of them!

What to Expect at Come Solo Trivia

Never been to a singles event before? Not sure how it all works? Don’t worry!

Here’s the plan for the evening.

  • 6 PM: Doors open. Arrive, grab a drink, and mingle before the games begin.
  • 7 PM: Game one. You’ll join a randomized team and put your trivia knowledge to the test.
  • 8 PM: Game two. Meet a whole new group of teammates for another abbreviated trivia game.

Each game will last about an hour, giving you two opportunities to meet new people throughout the night. Hot Potato Hearts will also have fun icebreakers and an option for singles who are interested in mingling.

Again, don’t worry about bringing a team. In fact, if you do show up with friends, you’ll be intentionally split up! The idea is to step outside your usual circle and make some new connections.

As much as you may love your weekly team, we have a feeling you’ll be able to shine in new ways with folks you’ve never met before. That’s the whole point, after all!

FAQ

What if I don’t have a regular trivia team?

That’s just fine! Come Solo Trivia is designed for individuals. You’ll be assigned to a randomized team when you arrive. If you bring friends along, you’ll be split up so everyone has a chance to meet someone new.

Is this a singles event?

It’s a great opportunity for singles looking to mingle, but the bigger goal is to make connections and build community. Whether you’re hoping for romance, new friendships, or simply a fun night out, you’re welcome to join.

Will I fall in love?

Maybe! We can’t promise you’ll meet your future partner, but we can promise an evening of trivia, new faces, and opportunities to connect. We’ll leave the rest up to fate… just like your final score.

Do I need to be good at trivia?

Not at all. The goal is to have fun and meet people, not to prove you’re the smartest person in the room. Bring your curiosity, your sense of humor, and your willingness to give it a shot. Lots of laughs come from painfully wrong answers, after all.

How much are tickets?

Tickets are available on a sliding scale from $5 to $15, making it easier to join in at a price that works for you. Use this link to sign up.

Anna Shoultz serves as the Content and Editorial Coordinator for Whaddayaknow? Free Pub Trivia. Her first experience with Whaddayaknow? preceded her move to Chicago by nearly a year, when friends she was visiting took her to trivia at The Green Lady. After officially moving from San Diego, that one-off trivia night became a Chicago staple. Throughout the years, she’s joined friends that are Wednesday regulars at Friar Tuck, popped into seasonal music bingo at Hubbard Inn, and attended various other trivia nights across the city. After all, anyone who knows Chicago in the winter knows that this is one of the best (sometimes only) activities to keep warm, see friends, and get out of the house on gloomy weeknights.

In her role, Anna develops editorial content, visual storytelling, and social media features that introduce new audiences to Whaddayaknow? while celebrating the regulars who make each venue unique. Whether she's highlighting a championship team, spotlighting a neighborhood host, writing about a recent volunteer event, or capturing the energy of a packed trivia night, she enjoys documenting the moments that keep players coming back week after week.

When she's not behind the camera or planning content, you’ll find Anna trying new restaurants across the city, reading at the Lakefront, browsing pop-ups and farmers markets, or, of course, finding her new favorite spot to play trivia!
